It looks better, sounds clearer, and plays smoother. I was already impressed with realMyst released last year, but playing this version in VR is a whole different experience entirely. It's a great thing I haven't played the game for 19 years, so my memory is blank (more or less) and everything is freshītw, nice review using the Rift - rating 90%: Of course this game is worth $30, especially if you like puzzles and are new to Myst. More painted wooden textures - and the polygon level is great There's nothing like a great floor texture Wooden textures - not bad - but actually not really Alyx nor Boneworks ultramersion quality either - but you need to see it inside the game Sun, shadows, and lots of 3D grass - looks awesome - but I kinda think PCVR users just got the raw 2D version. Rocks could look like some tessellation was used, but maybe it's just a high poly level. I still think Obduction is performing much better than Myst, and for those of you knowing Obduction you get the idea. Still the game looks and plays great using either res 225% + EPIC + DLSS Quality - or just plain vanilla res 300% + EPIC. Actually didn't try to turn off motion smoothing, maybe that will help? I'll test that later. The game does run fine with no DLSS and EPIC settings using res 300%, but I don't get 90 fps - and motion smoothing is my friend. If I Increase to res 300%, then 90 fps is a no-go with no DLSS, and I need to use DLSS Performance to get anywhere near 90 fps. If I want solid 90 fps using EPIC settings, the game works fine in res 225% with DLSS Quality. Myst still works fine - but I am using a RTX 3090. Actually I think performance in the game is worse the Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, lol. Well, the dude does not state his performance (fps), but if I want just 90 fps then even res 300% is close to a no-go when using the EPIC in-game setting, DLSS or not. Now it's here, now it's time to settle an old score.Ĭontrols feel natural on the index. I never finished the myst series games because I have been waiting for a VR version of a game like this for over 20 years. The other thing is it's very optimized on EPIC settings for my rtx3090 and SUPPORTS DLSS! which is a BIG WIN! This game provides the VR legs people ask for with options available at for you to pick at start of the game which is a BIG bonus. Everybody seen me brag about the 300% supersampling I play all my games at but there is no need for that. What I am going to talk about is the performance. "There is no need for me to review this game because everybody knows myst. I had the privilege of covering him on several occasions, including when he announced his independent run for president in 1980. Anderson who died last Sunday at the age of 95. I must join those praising the late Congressman John B. 29 with “Phantom.” Other performances will be Disney’s “Newsies,” “42nd Street,” “A Second Helping, The Church Basement Ladies Sequel,” Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Grease,” and finally “Elf, the Musical.” Visitors can also purchase homemade bread and other treats from their bakery or browse in a number of craft shops located there as well. I haven’t even mentioned the dinner part of the dinner theater. If you see it, you won’t be disappointed. “Miracle on 34th Street” continues at the Fireside through Dec. I’m not in the habit of promoting commercial ventures but this Christmas season I wanted to share my experience. For example, 10-year-old Gracelyn Skrepenski played Susan Walker perfectly. Even the child actors seemed to give flawless performances. I've always thought of Gwenn as Kris Kringle but I have to at least give the Fireside’s Bill Nabel equal billing when I think of him now. The Fireside says it offers “world class professional theater” and I have to agree. The Fireside Dinner Theatre is a professional theater employing members of the Actors’ Equity Association and the musical they performed was delightful. Some of you may have seen the 1994 remake of the movie although I haven’t. It also featured a young Natalie Wood as Susan Walker, the daughter of one of the principal characters. Edmund Gwenn, who played Kris Kringle in that movie, won an Academy Award for best supporting actor. Also, this production was a musical, and the 1947 “Miracle on 34th Street” movie I’m familiar with isn’t. I didn’t know quite what to expect since the Fireside is a theater in the round. I do enjoy the occasional high school play and we have seen several Highland musicals in the past few years that I would describe as “captivating.” However, this was our first trip to the Fireside. We attended the holiday dinner theater at Cannova’s last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. That’s when we joined a bus trip to the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, - about 90 miles away - to see their dinner theater production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” My wife and I had our own encounter with Santa last month. Maybe he stops here so often because it’s been a lot warmer than up north. Maybe he has a lot of elves and brownies helping him. I’m also impressed that he can make so many public appearances and can still get all his work done at the North Pole, but then that’s why he’s Santa Claus. One of the places he’s visited is the Freeport Public Library. He has been coming to town - asking good little boys and girls what they want for Christmas. Now that’s an easy request to meet! Maybe she still had visions of Halloween still dancing in her head.Īnd speaking of easy, it’s pretty easy to bump into Santa this time of year. Maybe he could have been giving out Halloween candy since that holiday was a lot closer than Christmas.Īnd when it comes to candy, our two-year-old granddaughter recently told us over the phone what she wants for Christmas. I think he would have been wearing shorts. I almost expected to bump into Santa in that section of the store. Okay, there are no Halloween or Thanksgiving trees but when they appear that early, they should be. At first I was hoping they were Halloween trees or maybe Thanksgiving trees but no, they were Christmas trees. I know Christmas shopping comes earlier and earlier because my wife and I were walking through a Freeport store in September when we saw it: a display of fully lit artificial Christmas trees for sale. Plants take up c14 along with other carbon isotopes during photosynthesis in the proportions that occur in the atmosphere animals acquire c14 by eating the plants (or other animals). The ensuing atomic interactions create a steady supply of c14 that rapidly diffuses throughout the atmosphere. What is radiocarbon dating?Ĭarbon-14 is produced in the upper atmosphere when cosmic rays bombard nitrogen atoms. Whereas carbon-12 and carbon-13 are stable isotopes, carbon-14 is unstable or radioactive. carbon-14 (c14), represented by one carbon atom per trillion.carbon-13 (c13), comprising about 1% of carbon atoms.carbon-12 (c12), comprising 99% of carbon atoms. This discovery meant that there are three naturally occurring isotopes of carbon: In contrast, methane made from petroleum products had no measurable radioactivity. Working with several collaboraters, Libby established the natural occurrence of radiocarbon by detecting its radioactivity in methane from the Baltimore sewer. Since carbon is fundamental to life, occurring along with hydrogen in all organic compounds, the detection of such an isotope might form the basis for a method to establish the age of ancient materials. Libby, a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Chicago, predicted that a radioactive isotope of carbon, known as carbon-14, would be found to occur in nature. It’s not the first time The 1975 frontman has sparked controversy – Healy drew criticism earlier this year for appearing to do a Nazi salute on stage during a song called “Love it If We Made It”, as he sang lyrics that are critical of Kanye West. Members of Malaysa’s LGBTQ community have also criticized Healy’s actions, with some calling it “performative” and warning that it could lead to further discrimination. Healy’s actions sparked controversy online, with some fans complaining that the band’s actions will result in a further crackdown on artistic expression and make it more difficult for music artists to perform in Malaysia in the future. “However, never touch on the sensitivities of the community, especially those that are against the traditions and values of the local culture,” he said, according to the agency.ĬNN has reached out to the Malaysian Home Affairs Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office for comment. “We sincerely apologize to all of our ticket holders, vendors, sponsors, and partners.”Ĭommunications Minister Fahmi said Malaysia was committed to supporting the development of creative industries and freedom of expression, Reuters reported. The Ministry has underlined its unwavering stance against any parties that challenge, ridicule, or contravene Malaysian laws,” the festival’s statement added. “This decision adheres to the immediate cancellation directive issued at 1:20 pm, 22 July 2023, by the Ministry of Communications and Digital. The Good Vibes Festival said in a statement following the incident, “We deeply regret to announce that the remaining schedule of the Good Vibes Festival 2023, planned for today and tomorrow has been canceled following the controversial conduct and remarks made by UK artist Matty Healy from the band The 1975.” I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before and it doesn’t feel good,” Healy says in the video before bassist Ross MacDonald walks up to him and kisses him on stage. “If you want to invite me here to do a show, you can f*** off. Healy added that the band considered canceling the show but decided against it to not disappoint the fans. You are young people, and I’m sure a lot of you are gay and progressive,” he said addressing the audience. And that’s not fair on you, because you’re not representative of your government. “Unfortunately, you don’t get a set of loads of uplifting songs because I’m f***ing furious. In an expletive-laden speech during the band’s headline performance on Friday, captured in a video shared widely on social media, Healy said, “I do not see the point of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with.” Homosexual acts are illegal in Malaysia and punishable by fines and up to 20 years in prison. The on-stage incident at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur on Friday night prompted the country’s Ministry of Communications to cancel the rest of the three-day event. A music festival in Malaysia has been canceled after the lead singer of British band The 1975 Matty Healy slammed the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws and kissed a bandmate on stage. The astronomy community usually considers FirstScope and its variants to be “toy telescopes.” But it’s one of the only few working telescopes for sale near $50 in the US, and it doesn’t have a shaky mount. $300 range, refractor: Celestron Inspire 100AZ Refractor – The Celestron Inspire 100AZ is arguably quite inferior to the similarly-priced and larger tabletop dobsonian reflectors available, but the Inspire is a little more kid-friendly with features like a smartphone adapter and focus markings, as well as not requiring any collimation (periodic alignment of the optics) as reflectors do.The collapsible tube means it can be stored virtually anywhere when not in use. $300 range: Sky-Watcher Heritage 150P Tabletop Dobsonian – The whole telescope, though with a 6″ aperture, can still be picked up with one hand and fit in a duffel bag or suitcase. The Z114’s views are just a bit bigger, sharper, and brighter compared to the Z100, without much of a difference in portability. $225 range: Zhumell Z114 Tabletop Dobsonian – The Z114 is basically a scaled-up Z100, albeit unable to be attached to a tripod and with a properly adjustable primary mirror. It can also be attached to a photo tripod. There’s a reason we recommend it not just for kids but indeed for all ages at this price point. $150 range: Zhumell Z100 Tabletop Dobsonian – The Zhumell Z100 is the lowest priced telescope on the market with quality optics and comes with an easy-to-use and lightweight tabletop Dobsonian mount, some decent eyepieces and a red dot finder for aiming. Its views of the Moon, planets, and a few select bright deep-sky objects will blow kids away if they’re patient, and if something happens to it, it’s not too expensive of a loss-which might be good if you have particularly young children. $75 range: Celestron FirstScope Tabletop Dobsonian – While the FirstScope is admittedly a bit of a letdown for adults in terms of its usefulness and image quality, it’s at least stable, convenient, and easy to use.On the other hand, if you buy them a cheap junk telescope, you risk killing their enthusiasm for astronomy and permanently turning them away from it. However, there are some kid-friendly passable options in the sub-$150 price range that I will mention here if you can’t risk losing a lot of money in case your kid loses interest in the hobby faster than you anticipate. For a real starter-quality telescope, one should spend at least $150. But still, you’d be getting way less optical quality and value for your money if you go the refractor route. Refractors are more capable of withstanding rough handling by kids as well. Kids aren’t as picky about things like chromatic aberration, so a short refractor, which I wouldn’t recommend for an adult, will be fine for a child. Do they want to view land objects during the day? Only a refractor telescope can do that since reflectors (most of our recommendations in this guide are reflector telescopes with tabletop dobsonian mount design) give an upside-down image on terrestrial viewing. If you have a budget of more than $400, an older child, or intend to always use the telescope along with your child, it may be worth reading our regular guide for purchasing telescopes. Over the age of ten or eleven, you might be better off picking a full-fledged, adult-sized telescope for your child to use. Let’s get to the differentiators first.įirst, there’s age. A young child under five is simply not going to be able to grasp the complicated concepts behind viewing anything besides the Moon and simply won’t be able to use the instrument at all on their own-furthermore, there’s a high risk of them being unable to understand the danger of viewing the Sun and blinding themselves. Adult guidance would be required from time to time since telescopes require a bit of knowledge and maintenance (storage, cleaning, alignment, e.t.c). Usually, we recommend a tabletop Dobsonian for children, but your unique requirements might call for a different model. Budget, portability, and value for money should be the main deciding factors when you are trying to buy a telescope for your kid. Half the time, subliminal messages are simple but effective, and other times it requires a second glance, such as what is mentioned above with popular company logos. Limen in Latin means threshold - below the threshold of the consciousness, and if you ever go to the cinema for example, and the slogan "Eat Popcorn" appears on screen, the viewer may feel tempted to order and eat popcorn. Look at the letters T, I and T in the centre of their logo – they form a pair of friends, bonding over a bowl of chips and salsa.Ĭommonly Asked Questions What is subliminal in simple words? This brand of tortilla chips may be relatively new to the UK, but they sure know how to make their brand seem fun and friendly. While the jury is still out on their efficacy, that hasn’t stopped advertisers and corporations from trying to harness their potential power.ġ0. The effect lasts a very short time, and even then, only marginally. However, some double-blind studies show that embedded images do affect actions and behaviours. While some people are convinced that subliminal messages do indeed work wonders, it seems that when they do make a change it is down to the placebo effect. Psychologists and scientists have not yet come to a full consensus about whether subliminal messages are actually effective at convincing people to do or want things that they would otherwise not want. A big example of this is in the 1988 John Carpenter film They Live, where the protagonist finds a pair of glasses that allows him to see the real intent behind advertising messages, such as money, billboards and magazines, and that a secret society of aliens is planning on brainwashing the population after impersonating high authority figures.Īre subliminal messages actually effective? The way a subliminal message works is to embed a message into the reader or viewer's mind without it being immediately noticeable and gradually works over a period of time. Drawings or photos that contain hidden or subtle images, such as words spelled out in clouds in the background.Words and images briefly flashing in between frames of film, usually at one tenth of a second.Embedding a message in a song, either in the higher or lower frequencies or by singing something backwards. The most classic examples of subliminal advertising and messaging include: The word itself refers to the fact that this message should pass below (that is, sub) your normal perception, underneath its limits – therefore being liminal. Simply put, a subliminal message is a message that is meant to sort of ‘slip past your mental radar’ and embed itself deep into your subconscious mind. What is a subliminal message and how does it work? Since subliminal advertising often makes an appearance in pop culture and moral panics, it’s easy to write them off as pure fiction – but not so fast! Many companies do in fact use subliminal messaging in their branding and adverts, but in much less nefarious ways. Remember – w asn’t Paul supposed to be dead? After all, who can forget the hilarious Simpsons episode where Bart joins a boy band, only for Lisa to realise that his hit song “Yvan eht nioj” is actually “Join the Navy” sung backwards? This episode plays on the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s obsession with ‘satanic’ rock bands embedding subliminal messages into backwards music lyrics. We’ve probably all seen a television sitcom or cartoon in which a company uses subliminal messages to entice unwitting viewers into buying their product. I know many people, myself included, would be more than willing to support that. Considering the current cost is $10, and it's 121 tracks, $20 for a proper OST would still be a steal. One of the team members in the discord mentioned that getting the music crew back together to make a proper release would double the price of the OST (because apparently asking them to export their projects in WAV is too much to ask). I could have been listening to the gamerip this whole time, since it's the exact same thing, down to the lack of artist credits. As someone who waited for and anticipated this for so long, I am truly disappointed. There has been a gamerip for a while now, and I held off on listening to it because I wanted to wait for the official release with proper artist credits. And it's very noticeable (seriously, 16kHz cutoff? That's worse than YouTube quality, which is already a low bar) All the tracks that are lossy in the game are lossy here.
